A Report on the Violations of Security Forces Against Peaceful Protesters & Medical Staff

———————————————

The coup forces continue their abhorrent violations of human rights, international conventions, and Sudanese social norms by raiding hospitals and firing tear gas inside them with no regard to patients, isolation centers with large number of COVID 19 patients, and medical staff

Below, we summarise relevant reported violations that took place during the past few anti-coup protests

- On January 2nd, 2022, Police and Uniformed personnel have raided Khartoum Teaching Hospital twice. In the first one, they beat maintenance staff, fired tear gas inside their office, and stole a mobile phone from one member of staff. On the second raid that occurred later in the day, they have attacked the medical staff and chased them, causing a female doctor to trip and fall

Security forces have also fired tear gas inside the hospital more than once. This triggered a fire on trees inside Sir Lee Stack National Laboratory. Fortunately, staff on duty managed to extinguish the fire early and thus prevented potential catastrophic consequences that could have occurred as a result

- On December 30th, 2021, the coup forces including members from police fired tear gas inside Al Arbaeen Hospital in Omdurman and attempted to seize the bodies of civilians who were killed during the December 30th protests. On the same day, the militia stormed East Nile Hospital by force, and intimidated patients and medical staff on duty, searched for injured civilians, and arrested them while receiving treatment

The security forces invaded Khartoum Hospital’s Emergency & Trauma center, and ICU with no regard for the patients and attempted arresting the injured civilians. They fired tear gas heavily inside the Emergency & Trauma center leading to suffocation and injuries among patients and medical staff

Some snipers belonging to the coup forces took the roof of Alia Military Hospital as a base for sniping peaceful anti-coup protesters with no regard to the sanctity of the building and civilians near it

Medical and health care staff remain to face significant difficulties and dangers while carrying their duties, especially the field teams on duty during the protests. Security forces have repeatedly intentionally stopped medical teams, beat them, and hijacked ambulances. This has occurred recently on December 30th, 2021 while transferring a critically wounded civilian with a neck gunshot injury from Al Arbaeen Hospital to Omdurman Hospital

- On December 25th, 2021, a police force invaded Port Sudan Teaching Hospital in search of injured protesters and arrested an injured female protester

The above incidents can be added to a series of previous incidents documented by the Unified Office of Sudanese Doctors in their latest report published on the November 22, 2021

The Unified Office of Sudanese Doctors has been monitoring and exposing the different violations committed by security forces since the military coup on October 25th, 2021, and will continue to escalate them to the highest levels
